Dubstep
A new genre of electronica seems to be sweeping the campus club scenes. At least according to Tuesday's Lantern. This new brand of dance music is called Dubstep and I have to say I really enjoy it. It seems to be almost entirely remixes of other songs with new bass lines dropped in and heavy table work done over top to change the rythmns. Fans of metal are raving about dubstep and I can't explain why, but it's just entrancing. Maybe it's the way in which mainstream songs are being plunged even deeper into the world of electronic music generation, furthering the dichotomy between them and bands that still play instruments. Perhaps it's the grittiness and 8-bit prevalence that has simultaneously been creeping into the metal scene via bands like Horse the Band. It could just be that it's good dance music and you can't help but nod you head to it. I like the last reason. Dubstep is just fun to dance to. If you get a chance, youtube TrustFundKilla, you will get a pretty good idea of the sounds of the genre from that.
