Jim Tressel and Gene Smith discuss December scandal |
Since he has become coach we have over 100 more NCAA violations than the next closest school. We have lost two National Championships and a Fiesta Bowl, twice to USC and a number of other big games. Now we don't have five of our most crucial players for the first five games of the seasons and for the first two, our coach won't even be on the field! How can someone still support The Senator in light of all this?
Here's how: nobody's perfect. Tressel never claims to be perfect. Tatgate (stupid name) scandal aside, Tressel has maintained a squeaky clean name for himself, regardless of what actually happens behind closed doors. That's more than most coaches can say for themselves. Rich Rod was hit with several major violations before he ever even played a game at Michigan. Pete Carroll simply left his school after violations started to effect recruiting.

A real criminal |
Let me shed a little light on the statements I made at the outset of this article. The extra NCAA violations, according to The Lantern, represent the fact that Ohio State reports violations at a much higher percentage than nearly any other school in the country. Looking at 'Ohio State NCAA violations' as a number, does not give the whole picture. I'll leave it up to you to make a decision about what I'm trying to imply (that other schools actually commit more but don't report as honestly). To all the accusers that will now come out of the Buckeye Nation woodwork and yell about how Tressel really isn't as clean and moral a coach as everyone says, I say fuck you.

A real idiot |
Okay so maybe we did lose two National Championships and a bowl game or two. At least we got there. Where are the teams we played? Florida lost their coach and fell out of contention in their own conference. Even before their losing season last year they were relegated to played our little brother Cincinnati in the Toilet Bowl. LSU still competes but didn't even win their own conference, which I will admit is much more rigorous than ours. Texas, who beat us a few years ago in the Fiesta Bowl, is completely off the map. Mack Brown sucks, Colt McCoy plays for the Browns, they're nothing. USC beat us twice but has also completely fallen off and has become irrelevant in the PAC 10, and let's not go into their NCAA violations. I'll go even further back to the beginning of our decade of sustained relevance under Tressel, our victory over Miami. Where are the Hurricanes now? Struggling in their underwhelming conference, and we beat them again.
Jim Tressel has maintained extremely talented, national contender teams for a decade. And he's a coach in Ohio.
Ohio!

One of our major draws |
A place where it's cold roughly half the year. There are no beaches, no casinos, no Bourbon streets, Hollywood plazas, Wayans brothers or whatever that stupid coach said, nothing that would attract college-aged superstar athletes who can't think of anyone but themselves. All we have is a tradition of football excellence and pride, and that's apparently all the Vest needs to recruit quality guys. But then he does something else. The players leave as men, not self-indulgent losers, I'm talking to you Cam Newton (please forget about Maurice Clarette, he doesn't count).

Two BCS Bowl games in a row and 5-3 overall?
Yes Please. |
Regardless of details, this scandal is another ploy by the media to tear down our great University and it's college football program, and most embarrassing for them, our immaculate coach (at least by comparison). Maybe he should have told someone about the 'classified' information regarding a federal investigation leaked to him. Or maybe he should have continued coaching football. Who can truly say?
None of any of this matters however, only one thing really does, is that we are 9-1 against SCum under Jim Tressel, and that is the end of that.
Fuck Michigan
Go Bucks
two things
ReplyDeleteplayed our little brother Cincinnati in the Toilet Bowl
this toilet bowl is the same one OSU won this year

lol, I ain't even mad. I thought he got fired. I better check my facts. And you're right, but at least we played a team from a decent conference in our toilet bowl.
ReplyDeleteI think Buckeye fans typically tend to skate over this whole issue because it's Tressel. He has such a positive, conservative front and he gets results in the conference, therefore anyone saying anything negative about the 'Vest means it's wrong. I've argued to death on forums as to why Jim isn't like the rest, and this case makes pretty much everything I've said a lie.
ReplyDeleteI love what he's done as a coach, but perhaps the 'haters' are actually on to something. Maybe he's not as squeaky clean as we'd hoped. This is a big, dumb mistake on his part. If it was known that there was a violation at the end of the season, and OSU is reporting violations at a greater percentage as you reported, why did it take a Yahoo! Sports article to spark all of this instead of Gene Smith and Gordon Gee coming out to report this two months ago? I have a feeling there's a lot more to this story that we'll find out after the NCAA investigates, and Buckeye fans won't like what they find because it will continue to give Jim the perception that everyone else is saying.
I agree with you Nick. The only thing that really changes is now I can't say that Ohio State and Tressel are better than everyone else. But I don't think that negates any of the stuff I've said. Except I should redact saying 'Fuck You' to people who say Tressel isn't moral and clean. I'll just have to say it for other reasons.
