Monday in my women's history class we discussed how women in the 50s tended to marry younger and my professor attributed this mostly to sex. A desire to experience sex drove young couples to marry younger and move out on their own. My immediate question was, does this still happen? On average it seems women are marrying later and later in life, but in what sub-cultures of our society do couples still marry young? I asked one of my openly religious friends and she said most people she knows in her youth groups don't marry any younger than people outside of those groups. Additionally, those that do get married aren't doing it for sex, but for deeper, religious reasons, and people in her youth groups do seem to be in committed relationships more often than those outside the groups.
First, deeper, religious reasons? I don't know about that. I will acknowledge that a little brainwashing can suppress some human nature, but a desire to have sex seems like it would be extremely difficult to contain after 3-4 years in a relationship with the same person, I just don't see it as possible. With the access we have to sex and the amount it's discussed and accepted in society.
I did a quick search and found this heavily religious article, so read with caution. Post your thoughts on this subject.
